Frequently asked questions

Everything you might wonder about tracking loans, splitting bills, and settling up on kasama.loan. Still stuck? Reach us on the contact page.

Getting started

What is kasama.loan?

kasama.loan is a peer-to-peer ledger for the small debts that pass between friends, family, and groups — a lunch you covered, a shared ride, a borrowed drill. Instead of a note in your phone that only you can see, every entry is confirmed by both people, so there is one honest record you both agree on.

Is kasama.loan free?

Yes. Recording loans, splitting bills, confirming who owes whom, and settling up are all free. An optional Pro upgrade removes ads and adds a few conveniences, but the core ledger costs nothing and always will.

Do I need to download an app?

No. kasama.loan runs in any web browser. On a phone you can add it to your home screen from the browser menu, and it opens full-screen like a normal app. Native Android and iOS apps are on the roadmap.

Does the other person need an account?

To hold a confirmed balance with you, yes — but you do not have to wait for them. You can log the loan and send an invite link over chat. The entry becomes active once they open it, join, and confirm their side.

What can I track on kasama.loan?

Cash loans in either direction, bills split across a group, whole events or trips with many shared expenses, and lent or borrowed items such as a book or a tool. Each of these keeps its own running total.

Recording and confirming

How does two-way confirmation work?

Every entry needs both people to agree before it counts. When you record that someone owes you, they receive a request to confirm or dispute it, and no balance moves until both sides agree. This is the core idea: a debt only exists on kasama once the two people involved have both signed off on it.

What if the other person disputes an entry?

Nothing is forced onto anyone. If they disagree, the entry does not become a live balance — you two sort out the difference and re-record it correctly. Because confirmation is required up front, disagreements surface immediately instead of months later.

Can I log a loan that already happened or is already settled?

Yes. You can record a past loan or a repayment that already took place outside the app. The other person confirms it, and it is saved as a settled record without ever moving a live balance. This is useful for catching up your history or keeping a clean paper trail.

Can I log a loan that I owe someone else?

Yes. You can record from your own side — money you owe another person — and it only becomes a live balance once they accept it. Direction and paid-or-unpaid status are both yours to set when you log the entry.

Settling up

How do I settle a loan?

When the debt is paid in real life, the person who paid marks it, and the other person confirms they received it. Once both agree, the loan is settled and drops out of your active balances, kept only as a record.

Can I settle everything with one person at once?

Yes. When you and someone have several loans running back and forth, kasama nets them into a single figure and groups them into one card. Whoever owes the net pays it in one transfer, the other person confirms receipt, and every loan between you settles together. If you are the one who is owed, you can nudge them to settle instead of waiting.

How do I remind someone about a loan?

For anyone already on kasama, you can send a reminder link over chat or SMS that opens straight to the entry for them to confirm, accept, or pay. For someone not yet on kasama, you share an invite link or QR code instead. You are the only person who can send a reminder for your own entry.

Can I attach proof of payment?

Yes. When you settle up you can attach a screenshot of the transfer as proof. It is stored temporarily and cleared automatically about a week after the loan settles.

Money, interest, and items

Does kasama.loan lend money or charge interest?

No. kasama.loan is a record-keeping tool, not a lender. It never moves, holds, advances, or guarantees money. You can note interest that you and the other person have already agreed on between yourselves, but kasama does not set, charge, or collect it.

How are lent items different from cash?

An item — a drill, a book, a charger — is tracked as a separate class from money. You can record an optional declared value for reference, but that value is never counted in your cash balance, because you cannot cash-settle a physical thing. When the item comes back, you close the entry.

What currency does it use?

It is built for the Philippines and uses the peso by default, but the amounts are just numbers, so it works anywhere.

Privacy, data, and safety

Is my data private?

Your ledger is visible only to you and the people involved in each entry. No one can see a loan they are not a party to. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

What happens to the photos and screenshots I upload?

They are temporary. A payment-proof screenshot is deleted about a week after the loan settles; a receipt photo is deleted about two weeks after a loan is settled, forgiven, or cancelled, or after 90 days of inactivity. There is no keep-forever option — download a copy first if you want to keep an image. Your loan records themselves stay for as long as your account is active.

What if someone logs a loan against me that isn't real?

It cannot become a balance without your confirmation, so a false entry simply never counts. If a person keeps sending unwanted entries or requests, you can block them, which stops future loans and friend requests from them.

Is a kasama record a legal document?

kasama is an agreement and record-keeping tool, not a notary or court. A document it generates is evidence of an agreement both people recorded, but it is not, by itself, a legal instrument. Treat it as a clear, mutually confirmed record rather than a contract.

Account and Pro

What does Pro add?

Pro removes ads and adds a few conveniences on top of the free ledger. Everything essential — recording, confirming, splitting, and settling — is free without it.

How do I cancel Pro?

You can cancel any time. When you cancel you keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for, then the account simply reverts to Free — your records are untouched.
